Water and Wastewater Consulting Services

  • Client Challenge

Industrial facilities face unique challenges in managing their water, wastewater and stormwater systems due to the complexity of their operations, variable waste streams, and evolving regulatory expectations. Compliance with municipal or provincial discharge requirements can be difficult -especially when internal technical resources are limited and treatment systems are pushed beyond their original design. Facilities often struggle to identify the root causes of recurring exceedances, optimize treatment performance, or determine the operational impact of chemicals and practices used across their sites. Without targeted, practical support, this can lead to costly non-compliance, unnecessary treatment system upgrades, and inefficient operations.

  • How We Can Help

Aureus supports industrial clients by providing focused, expert consulting services to investigate system issues, optimize performance, and reduce compliance risks. With experience across hundreds of treatment systems, we bring operational insight and a data-driven approach to every project. Whether evaluating treatment options, assessing upstream sources of contamination, troubleshooting system inefficiencies, or reviewing facility procedures, Aureus delivers practical recommendations that support informed decision-making and operational improvements. Our services are designed to be flexible, cost-effective, and grounded in real-world industry knowledge.

  • Our Expertise

Root Cause Investigations, Source Control Evaluations, Options Analysis, Regulatory and Bylaw Compliance Support, Performance Benchmarking, Process Optimization, System and Chemical Compatibility Reviews, Sampling Program Design and Analysis, Staff Guidance and Operational Planning, Asset and Lifecycle Planning.

Featured Project

Aureus was retained by a major national industrial client to investigate recurring exceedances of chemical oxygen demand (COD) at one of its wastewater treatment plants. Despite significant infrastructure upgrades—including the installation of a granular activated carbon (GAC) system - effluent COD levels continued to exceed municipal bylaw limits, resulting in compliance risks and costly media replacements. Aureus conducted a comprehensive review of the facility, including a multi-year data analysis, site inspections, sampling across multiple shop areas, and detailed interviews with staff. The investigation identified key operational and chemical sources of COD along with actionable strategies to reduce influent loading and extend GAC media life. Our findings enabled the client to implement a targeted reduction plan and supported defensible decisions around treatment performance and future system optimization.

  • The main objective was to investigate recurring COD exceedances at a national industrial client’s wastewater treatment plant and identify strategies to reduce compliance risks and operating costs.

  • Despite significant infrastructure upgrades, including a granular activated carbon (GAC) system, the facility continued to experience effluent COD exceedances, leading to regulatory non-compliance and costly media replacements.

  • Aureus conducted a comprehensive facility review, including multi-year data analysis, site inspections, sampling across shop areas, and staff interviews. This approach identified both operational practices and chemical sources contributing to high COD levels.

  • The investigation provided actionable strategies to reduce influent COD loading and extend GAC media life, directly addressing compliance challenges and lowering operating costs.

  • The client gained a targeted reduction plan, defensible data-driven insights, and a foundation for future system optimization, ensuring stronger treatment performance and regulatory reliability.
